The Human Body by Mona Kuhn

The Human Body by Mona Kuhn

The Human Body by Mona Kuhn

Photographer Mona Kuhn is best known for her large-scale photographs of nudes. Her work redefines the ways of looking at the body. Her pictures often depict classical themes with a light and insightful touch. Kuhn’s approach to her photography is unusual that she develops close relationships with her subjects, resulting in images of remarkable naturalness and intimacy. Her subjects are naked but they are comfortable in their own skin.

As Kuhn said, “I always feel that people are dressed in their own skin.” For her, the nude is like “an art-historical costume you can’t get away from. And if a nude is a costume, then naked would be a uniform.” Focusing her lens on different subjects including her friends and family, Kuhn’s photographs are markedly egalitarian – meaning that every one of them is equal in every aspect.

Night Paintings by Renan Cepeda

This photography project Night Paintings is a series of photographs shot by photographer Renan Cepeda using his unusual photographic technique in infrared photography and light painting. These fantastical images are created from long exposure, night-time shots that Cepeda “painted” with light using a simple pocket torch. His innovative technique turns an ordinary photo into a magical one.

Cepeda creates a contrast between the present natural object and artificially imposed scenery. This contrast produces a magical motif, which shows his creativity. Cepeda resisted the temptation of using Photoshop to manipulate his images, so the composition of the pictures remained true to the simplicity of the object.

The Artificial Face by Thomas Rusch

The Artificial Face by Thomas Rusch

The Artificial Face by Thomas Rusch

The visual impressions of this large-sized color photographs of the photo project The Artificial Face by Thomas Rusch have an attracting and disturbing effect to the viewers. The faces of his models are masked almost beyond recognition with milky clothes and surgical gauze soaked in red. Only the eye sockets and the mouth mark human identity. In this series, Rusch melted together the difference between skin and mask, the human body and artificial texture. Moreover, he achieved this photos even without digital modification.

Rusch’s masks created with make up and transparent materials isolated the face’s features. The face, instead of simply being a part of the body, reveals itself as a cultural concept. Like in real life, his masks reveal by covering and they mask by revealing themselves.

This is Not Pornography by Paul Smith

At first glance, you would think that this photography project is pornography, but it is not. In this series, photographer Paul Smith chose to explore the new frontier of the digital aesthetic, depicting fantasy in contrast to reality. He combined the elements of pornography into a forms that is slightly deviates from reality.

The title gives us what Smith intends this work to communicate. “This is not a pornography” is not just a title but also a statement. The most common definition of pornographic image is to stimulate erotic rather than aesthetic reactions. The distortions and violent nature of some of these images intends to have a rebarbative effect rather than erotic.

Infected Landscape by Shai Kremer

Infected Landscapes by Shai Kremer

Infected Landscapes by Shai Kremer

In 1999, Israeli photographer Shai Kremer started photographing the ominous traces of the military on the landscapes of Israel and on their society. Her pictures reflect the trauma and resulting damages in living in a world of conflict and war, it also warns of the permanent effects in the people’s lives.

Kremer’s images are often attractive, aesthetic, innocent and poetic. These landscapes, infected with sediments and fragments of the ongoing conflict, becomes a platform of discussion. These photographs attract the viewer and then challenges him to reflect on their meaning and implications.

As written by Sverker Svorlin, “Military landscapes are collective memories. They remind us that political violence has a spatiality and that it can be found also amongst landscape that we have learned to love. Giving these military landscapes some visibility may therefore be an act of peace.”

13 Queens by Alex and Felix

Rulers over surreal worlds.

“There are unfamiliar worlds waiting to be discovered, filled with very well known objects of our everyday life yet staged in an unexpected way beyond recognition, draped with exuberant costumes of various shapes and colours. The insignia of power, the signs of their dreamland, hang from their bodies, stick to their skin and surround the sphere of their heads. These queens have truly incorporated their sensual empire. Every single one a proud queen, patron saint of ornaments, ruler over an empire of symbols, inviting the viewer to lose oneself.” These are the exact words that describe Alex and Felix‘s photography project 13 Queens that is taken from their website.

Alex Gertschen and Felix Meier are Swiss photographers creating photographs in an imaginative world, often absurd and surreal. The models, objects and props are carefully constructed before being to give a magical look. Each queen represent different personalities and stories.

India Song by Karen Knorr

India Song by Karen Knorr

India Song by Karen Knorr

Karen Knorr‘s works portrays the visual richness found in the stories of India using sacred sites to highlight caste, femininity and its relationship with the animal world.

In her most recent photography project, the “India Song”, each finished photograph is both a mystery and a fable. She recreated the Panchatantra – an ancient Indian collection of animal fables for the 21st century and blurred the boundaries between illusion and reality. She inserts the animal subjects by digital means within the consistently frontal interior photograph. These interiors are carefully photographed with a large format analogue camera and Knorr’s own photos of live animals are then inserted to the rooms and sites.

The India Song is her first solo show in United States. The series was also nominated for the 2012 Deutsche Borse Photography Prize.

He and his makeup artist Orla McKeating removed the color from their models and added colors of their own with light painting.
