Creative Shots by Handy Andy Pandy

Handy Andy Pandy is a Melbourne-based photographer who is currently keeping up a 365-day challenge. The rules for this challenge are simple: take a photograph once a day, everyday, for 365 days straight. Most who do take on the challenge lose interest after several months for lack of time or creativity. Not Handy Andy Pandy though. Sometimes, it takes him anywhere between six to seven hours a day to capture that perfect shot. He said: “I’m smack bang in the middle of a 365 Project and loving it! I’m trying to challenge myself and push myself to grow as a photographer and a photomanipulator”.

Surreal Portraits of Kids Submerged Underwater by Alix Martinez

Surreal Portraits of Kids Submerged Underwater by Alix Martinez

Alix Martinez has shot portraits of children underwater for several years. She comes up with fun and imaginative scenes of children playing – like golf, football, and tennis. Most of these photos could even be categorized as fine art – like the one of the two Catholic girls holding hands and twirling in the water and the girl holding her yellow dress.

“I have always loved photographs that display ripples and reflections,” Martinez told My Modern Met when asked why she enjoys underwater photography. “There’s something magical and beautiful when water is photographed. Since I am a children’s photographer, I am always trying to come up with ideas to photograph them in a unique way.” Of course, shooting underwater comes with its own set of challenges. As Martinez explains, “Underwater photography can be quite difficult especially with little subjects. The first time I almost drowned because I saw a shot I did not want to miss, but It is so rewarding when you look at your images. When I started, I could only hold my breath for 25 seconds and now I feel like a marine going under for 2 minutes.”

Incredible High-Speed Photography by Daniel Nimmervoll

Daniel Nimmervoll is an Austria-based photographer who captured these incredible macro shots of water droplets using a high speed camera. The shot above captures a .22 caliber bullet that passed through the column of water produced by the drop of water as it hit the surface. Capturing a bullet in flight is no easy feat by itself, capturing one as it passes through a drop of water which exists for a mere second is relatively unheard of. High tech equipment helps, but it is the photographer’s skill whom due credit should be given.

Let It Rain Love: Beautiful Shelter Dog Pictures To Help Find Them New Homes

The images of 19 year old Jessica Trinh in her “Let It Rain Love” project features pictures of adorable dogs, but there is a deeper meaning that lies behind the series. By taking beautiful portraits of shelter dogs, Trinh aims to give each of them a chance at being adopted.

“I wanted to give back to the community. My dogs have changed my life and I wanted more dogs to help people change their lives so I felt it to be appropriate to start a new project,” Trinh writes on her site. “I hope this project enlightens everyone on the story of a shelter dog and not only makes people think twice about giving up a dog, but gives these beautiful shelter dogs a chance for a new home with love.” This project, says Trinh, was inspired by her own rescued dog, Daisy. “She has changed my entire life for the better. This project is inspired by her and I want to thank her for that because I believe this project will give a new meaning to my photography.

Stunning Macro Photographs of Butterfly Wings Taken by Biochemist

The macro and highly magnified photos of butterflies’ wings show the scales that make up the beautiful patterns that we see. Butterflies and moths both belong to the scientific order Lepidoptera (scaly wing). They are symbols of natural beauty, but Linden Gladhill, a biochemist and photographer, has created an amazing set of photographs that introduce us to the natural beauty of butterflies and moths on a higher level not seen by the naked eye.

“I’m completely enchanted by the physical world around me and obsessed by its natural beauty. My career in science has magnified this feeling of awe. For me, photography is a way to capture this physical beauty and to pass this feeling on to others,” he writes on his Flickr account.

Portraits of Tokyo’s Most Rebellious Fashion Icons

Portraits of Tokyo's Most Rebellious Fashion Icons

Portraits of Tokyo’s Most Rebellious Fashion Icons

New York-based photographer Thomas C. Card turns the camera on some of the most fashionable and fierce females in Tokyo. In the spring of 2012, Card traveled to Tokyo to document the city’s vibrant street fashion scene. Started in the early 1990s, Japanese fashion tribes sprung up as young people, particularly women, began to rebel against traditional Japanese culture. Instead of taking photos of these women on Tokyo’s busy streets, like in the famous district of Harajuku, he brought his subjects indoors – into a more quiet and intimate environment, his studio.

These fascinating photos have all been assembled into one book called Tokyo Adorned, which was released just ten days ago. Comprised of 132 striking color photographs, Tokyo Adorned is an oversized 12.5 by 15 inch hardcover book that gives us a window into one highly creative world. Set against an all white backdrop, the women and their complicated outfits, with their loud colors and crazy patterns, seem to pop off the page.

As the book states, “The neon, pastels, bows, and vibrant prints of Tokyo’s fashion tribes are unmistakable, outrageous, and fun. Recognized around the world, with huge online followings, the city’s style icons are photographed here against white backgrounds, revealing a new dimension of personality and emotion in these remarkable individuals. Portraits include fashion icon Kumamiki—the vision behind the Party Baby movement and clothing brand—who has a growing global online following, as well as personalities such as Chocomelo, Saki Kurumi, and Haruka Kurebayashi.”

Scotch Tape Selfies: Newest Trend On Facebook

People have begin wrapping their faces in scotch tape in what is probably the newest and weirdest trend on Facebook. After wrapping their faces up with clear tape and funnily distorting features, they take a selfies and share it with their friends.

“Sellofie” was first heard in 2012 when Wes Naman, an artist, had the same idea of taking portraits of people whose faces had been distorted with scotch tape. His photos have higher qualities and are not selfies, but the idea was all the same. Now, it has spread as a selfie trend. The 21-year-old Brighton University student Lizzie Durley started the Sellotape Selfie Facebook page after laughing at a scene in Yes Man in which Jim Carrey wrapped his own face. Now, her Facebook page has more than 120,000 likes and receives hundreds of submissions from enthusiastic selfie-takers every day.

Artist Liv Buranday Forms Clever Illustrations Out of Ground Coffee

For Filipino artist Liv Buranday, aka @livscreams on Instagram, coffee is for much more than just drinking! The Philippines-based nursing student was inspired by his father’s love for coffee and began experimenting with the grounds as a medium for her artwork. She says, “I’ve always known him to love brewed coffee, and then a thought popped out when he opened that Folgers Classic Roast—perhaps I can use its contents as art.” Thus, the hashtag #groundcoffeeart was conceived.

For each illustration, Buranday uses only her hands and a toothpick to organize the granules into the clever arrangements, occasionally adding natural elements like leaves or small sticks to complete the picture. She also sometimes use glue to avoid having loose granules all over the place. Then Buranday photographs each piece against a white background and shares the creations on her Instagram account.

A Friendship Of A Young Girl With An English Bulldog

Rebecca Leimbach has photographed the beautiful relationship between her daughter and her English Bulldog from the day she was born. After years of suffering infertility, Rebecca and her husband were finally blessed with their daughter Harper. They tried to have more children for Harper to have siblings and playmates but even IVF treatments were unsuccessful. Feeling an immense sense of guilt and sadness, Rebecca was surprised to find out that one had been living in their house in the name of Lola, their loyal English Bulldog.

“One day Harper came out of her playroom with Lola dressed as a princess and I realized, she has a playmate, the best kind in fact, one who doesn’t argue over being dressed up,” Rebecca tells My Modern Met. When asked about their friendship, she said, “They have a funny bond. Harper loves Lola immensely, except when Lola eats her toys, which happens quite often. Lola is very protective of Harper, she is always in Harper’s business. Whatever Harper is doing, Lola must investigate to make sure it’s kosher. Lola treats Harper like I think she would have treated one of her own puppies, had she not been spayed.”

Harper and Lola are seen playing on the beach and resting in the forest. It was only in the last year or so that Rebecca, a professional portrait and lifestyle photographer, started focusing on the two as playmates.
