Photographer Erena Shimoda observed after volunteering with the American Cancer Society that upon being diagnosed with cancer, a person will feel uncertain, scared, depressed and confused. And because Shimoda was an experienced diver, she thought she would help out by sharing her passion in underwater photography.

Shimoda has been doing underwater portrait sessions for the past years. The subjects of her photography are those that have survived the battle to cancer. Before going into the water, she suggests that her subjects wear an outfit and other accessories that they are fond of. The underwater photo shoot is done in a shallow pool where the subjects dive underwater while holding their breath.

Shimoda’s images help both the cancer survivors and the rest of society redefine how we look at them. The images bring out the beauty of survival and a life filled with dreams. ‘In the water, people rediscover their beauty, strength and capability,’ she told My Modern Net.
