Return to Sender by Tommy Kha

Memphis-based photographer Tommy Kha created a photo project called Return to Sender that takes a unique approach to self-portraiture. Rather than taking a straightforward image, he himself engaged in a one-sided kiss with dozens of strangers from various places. What’s amusing is that it’s the other person that is committed to the kiss while Kha stands motionless.

His passive character mirrors the stereotypes of Asian men who’s almost always depicted as neutered, asexual, or submissive within media. When approaching strangers, he has one direction for them, “”They can kiss me however they want but they have to kiss me on the lips.”

This project is still ongoing. Kha was born in Memphis, Tenn., and earned a bachelor’s degree from the Memphis College of Art.
