Portraits of Tokyo’s Most Rebellious Fashion Icons

Portraits of Tokyo's Most Rebellious Fashion Icons

Portraits of Tokyo’s Most Rebellious Fashion Icons

New York-based photographer Thomas C. Card turns the camera on some of the most fashionable and fierce females in Tokyo. In the spring of 2012, Card traveled to Tokyo to document the city’s vibrant street fashion scene. Started in the early 1990s, Japanese fashion tribes sprung up as young people, particularly women, began to rebel against traditional Japanese culture. Instead of taking photos of these women on Tokyo’s busy streets, like in the famous district of Harajuku, he brought his subjects indoors – into a more quiet and intimate environment, his studio.

These fascinating photos have all been assembled into one book called Tokyo Adorned, which was released just ten days ago. Comprised of 132 striking color photographs, Tokyo Adorned is an oversized 12.5 by 15 inch hardcover book that gives us a window into one highly creative world. Set against an all white backdrop, the women and their complicated outfits, with their loud colors and crazy patterns, seem to pop off the page.

As the book states, “The neon, pastels, bows, and vibrant prints of Tokyo’s fashion tribes are unmistakable, outrageous, and fun. Recognized around the world, with huge online followings, the city’s style icons are photographed here against white backgrounds, revealing a new dimension of personality and emotion in these remarkable individuals. Portraits include fashion icon Kumamiki—the vision behind the Party Baby movement and clothing brand—who has a growing global online following, as well as personalities such as Chocomelo, Saki Kurumi, and Haruka Kurebayashi.”

Fashionably Dressed Animals Photographed by Miguel Vallinas

Interested in the idea of anthropomorphism or the attribution of human characteristics or behavior to a god, animal, or object, Madrid-based photographer Miguel Vallinas manipulated animal photos and made it appear as though they were wearing human clothes. Animals wearing clothes are not entirely new to us but Vallinas’ work made it a notch further by giving the animals a full wardrobe, complete from head to toe.

Aerial and Fashion Photography Mashups by Joseph Ford

Aerial and Fashion Photography Mashups by Joseph Ford

Aerial and Fashion Photography Mashups by Joseph Ford

Joseph Ford is a talented photographer who was born in London in 1978. He began taking pictures while he was doing his degree in French and Italian at the University of Cambridge. He writes on his official blog “I work regularly with a team of stylists, hair/makeup artists, casting directors; location finders, animal handlers and production managers, and I can source people to coordinate all elements of a shoot.”

Aerial landscape photography and fashion photography hardly go together in most peoples’ minds, but not with Ford’s series of Aerial mashups. The whole series is actually made up of two photo projects done for two different magazines.

Creating these photographs was not easy. Although they selected landscapes and clothes that would go well together, the clothes had to be lit just right to match the landscapes and the fashion photos took as long as 12 hours to properly set up and shoot. There was almost no retouching done to the images at all except for some color balance tweaks.

Switcheroo: Portraits of Couples Swapping Clothes by Hana Pesut

Switcheroo: Portraits of Couples Swapping Clothes by Hana Pesut

Switcheroo: Portraits of Couples Swapping Clothes by Hana Pesut

Switcheroo is an ongoing portrait project by Canadian photographer Hana Pesut where couples are asked to swap clothing for a pair of portraits sent against an identical backdrop. The idea was born on a camping trip, when Pesut decided to photograph two of her friends who were dressed very differently: “One was wearing tie-dye, sequins, leopard print, lots of silk scarves. Everything was very bright and colorful. The other was wearing black jeans and a black T-shirt. I thought it would be fun if they switched outfits and I decided to take before and after photos”,- said Hana.

The resulting images are sometimes funny, while also having the effect of making one analyze both their views on fashion and sexual identity. It is interesting that many of the women look completely at home with male clothing, while the men often look ridiculous with dresses. One could conclude that while we have accepted many forms of stylistic expression from woman, men often have much stricter social norms to follow when it comes to fashion.

Wonderland by Kirsty Mitchell

Wonderland by Kirsty Mitchell

Wonderland by Kirsty Mitchell

Wonderland is an ongoing series of portraits by UK photographer Kirsty Mitchell as a part tribute to her mother, part conceptual photography and part exploration of costume and set design. Her mother’s death in 2008 filled Mitchell an emptiness that she sought an outlet to fill the vacuum. She revisited the fairy tales her mother used to share with her as a child and decided to use them as an inspiration for a series of portraits that would make use of her background in fashion and costume making.

Each costume and prop is painstakingly handmade, and each set is actually as beautiful as it looks in her photographs. Mitchell uses little artificial light during her shoots and only selects naturally beautiful locations around her home. Some scenes in Wonderland (2009-2012) required a twelve-month wait to capture the blooming seasonal flowers that are then around only for a two-week period.

What makes Wonderland magical is that it’s real. Most fantasy worlds today are created digitally in post production, thanks to Photoshop. But those in Wonderland are created with intensive handcrafting of props and costumes, real locations, the time and work for the preparation of the photo shoot and the intense dedication of Mitchell she brings to her heart.
