A Witness Through Lenses by James Nachtwey

A Witness Through Lenses by James Nachtwey

“I have been a witness, and these pictures are my testimony. The events I have recorded should not be forgotten and must not be repeated.”  These are the words of the photographer James Nachtwey, a witness through lenses. From the time when he was assigned to cover the civil strife in Northern Ireland in 1981 as a freelance photographer, he devoted himself to documenting wars and conflicts all over the world.

His photography project shows the various troubling issues around the world: war zones, prisoners, AIDS, abandoned children, etc. in full gray scale. He wants to show the world that there are enough problems around us, many are suffering the consequences including the innocent children and it is already enough and that it should be stopped.

Nachtwey has been a contract photographer with Time magazine since 1984 and his work has been pulished in National Geographic, Stern, Paris Match and New York Times Magazine to name a few. Because of his Humanistic Photography, he has been a recipient of the Common Wealth Award, Martin Luther King Award, Dr. Jean Mayer Global Citizenship Award, Henry Luce Award, Robert Capa Gold Medal (five times) and a lot more.
