Sumo wrestling in Japan not only is it a big business but it has also has strong ties to organised crime. The modern society has slowly been digging with gambling, match fixing and organised crime becoming a more permanent aspect of the sport.

In this series “Sumo”, photographer Paolo Patrizi explores the ancient art of sumo wrestling and the scandal erupting in the sport in recent years. As an escape from the scandal sumo has been attracting, Patrizi documented the daily routine of a wrestler – what the wrestlers eat, how they wear their hair and what they’re allowed to wear in public.

Patrizi’s subjects range from portraiture and feature projects to social issues and politics. His focus is always on the human and social aspects of a story.
