Time Is A Dimension: Cityscapes Transition from Night to Day by Fong Qi Wei

Time Is A Dimension by Fong Qi Wei

Time Is A Dimension by Fong Qi Wei

These stunning photographs by Fong Qi Wei are an attempt to capture the passage of time in still images and showcase colorful depictions of city life. Wei would like to invent a way to show how scenes change over time, without using a video camera or time-lapse photography. So he spends two to four hours shooting the same location between sunrise and sunset to record the dramatic change in light. He then layers various exposures and create collage images that shows the relationship between time and light.

Fong Qi Wei explains:

Most paintings and photographs are an instance of time. That’s not the way the world works. We experience a sequence of time, and that’s why a video is somehow more compelling than a freeze frame. I work in the confines of a photographic print, because I like to do so. But in a way, I wanted to break out of this restriction of a single slice of time in photography…Similarly, our experience of a scene is more than a snapshot. We often remember a sequence of events rather than a still frame full of details. In this series, I strive to capture both details and also a sequence of time in a single 2 dimensional canvas. I hope it gives you pause and reconsider what you experience versus what you shoot with your next camera phone.

Night Paintings by Renan Cepeda

Night Paintings by Renan Cepeda

Night Paintings by Renan Cepeda

This photography project Night Paintings is a series of photographs shot by photographer Renan Cepeda using his unusual photographic technique in infrared photography and light painting. These fantastical images are created from long exposure, night-time shots that Cepeda “painted” with light using a simple pocket torch. His innovative technique turns an ordinary photo into a magical one.

Cepeda creates a contrast between the present natural object and artificially imposed scenery. This contrast produces a magical motif, which shows his creativity. Cepeda resisted the temptation of using Photoshop to manipulate his images, so the composition of the pictures remained true to the simplicity of the object.
