Long Exposure Photographs of Waves by David Orias

Photographer David Orias from Santa Barbara, California takes photos of waves with a slow shutter speed, capturing their movement, color, and power as they come crashing down from the Pacific Ocean. The stunning photo series, titled Waves, were taken at the beaches of Southern California. “Southern California has its fire season and sometimes this creates conditions of eerie orange light in the morning as the sunlight is filtered and scattered by smoke particles. This creates unusual and to some viewers unrealistic colors. I take the baseline colors and work with them to create a fine art appeal,” says David.

Explosions in the Sky by Nick Pacione

Explosions in the Sky by Nick Pacione

Dallas-based photographer Nick Pacione has created a wonderful series of macro photographs of fireworks titled “Explosions in the Sky.” It offers a unique view of the chain reactions in a fireworks display, at a macro scale. He camped out below a firework show last 4th of July and captured these awesome shots using a macro lens.

Pacione created the abstract images by using a rack focus technique which alters the focus during his long exposures and transforms the fireworks into abstractions of light and color. Fireworks alone can be beautiful but Pacione’s works are even more. Instead of the typical willow tree-like shapes, the fireworks changed into glass tubes, flowers, and some shapes even resemble the little pointy ends of beetroots.

Long Exposure Fireworks Photos by David Johnson

While attending the International Fireworks Show in Ottawa, Canada, photographer David Johnson had his camera in hand and captured a beautiful series of firework photos. During the Spanish fireworks performance, Johnson decided to try something new instead of the standard long-exposure style that most photographer uses when shooting firework displays.

Johnson told www.thisiscolossal.com :

“The technique I used was a simple refocus during the long exposure. Each shot was about a second long, sometimes two. I’d start out of focus, and when I heard the explosion I would quickly refocus, so the little stems on these deep sea creature lookalikes would grow into a fine point. The shapes are quite bizarre, some of them I was pleasantly surprised with.”

Instead of capturing streaks of colored lines in the sky, the technique cause the fireworks to have volume, turning them into beautiful floral shapes.

Light Paintings by Michael Bosanko

Light Painting by Michael Bosanko

Light Painting by Michael Bosanko

Cardiff-based artist and photographer Michael Bosanko made light painting his specialty. He stumbled upon light painting when by chance, photographing a moonlit landscape went wrong. The long exposure he used left streaks in the final image. Curious, he tried to keep the camera on the tripod and and used torchlight to ‘draw’. It worked, and after experimenting with other flashlights, Bosanko was hooked to light painting ever since.

His personal Light Paintings portfolio has one thing in common: not one image was photo edited unless he re-sizes for the web or using watermarks. There is no layering or overlapping of any kind. Bosanko has chosen this path to keep his light graffiti pure and to learn from his mistakes and triumphs.

He uses a vast number of tools. He mostly uses digital pro Canon gear or sometimes film. Camera settings vary according to environment and exposure ranges from seconds to over an hour. The tools are mostly simple household torches along with bulbs, LEDs, fire or anything Bosanko can get his hands on.

Star Trails by Lincoln Harrison

Star Trails by Lincoln Harrison

Star Trails by Lincoln Harrison

At first look, these spectacular photos may look like a product of clever computer graphics or Photoshop. But who would have thought that these are, in fact, the product of hour after hour of painstaking night-time shooting by photographer Lincoln Harrison. This stunning pictures of star trails across the Australian night sky were taken over 15 hours. Captured using a long exposure lens, the trails are created as the Earth rotates, giving the look of stars moving across the sky.

Harrison bought his camera just a little over 3 years ago and intended it for taking pictures of items he planned to sell on eBay, but realized he had far more interesting subjects to capture. Within a week, he became a bona fide photo enthusiast and accumulated eight lenses for his camera.

These days, he takes landscape photos at least twice a week. He only uses his camera at night when the conditions for nighttime photo are perfect. By using long exposures, clever zooming techniques and combining two images into a unified whole during post-production, Harrison was able to produce these Van Gogh-like pictures.
