A Photographic Storyboard 4 Years In The Making: ” Faerieland ”

The photo project by photographer Ashley Lebedev “Faerieland” is a dark fairytale and is still on-going four years after its inception. “The idea and inspiration for this board came in 2010 while I was out one day walking in the woods with my dogs. During that walk, my cell phone’s camera began going off without being pushed. I didn’t look at my camera until later on that evening but when I did, I found a bright white picture of what looked like a fairy or pixie flying across the screen. I used that accidental image as my inspiration for the following series,” she said.

A Walk Inside an Ice Cave by Denis Budkov

A Walk Inside an Ice Cave by Denis Budkov

A Walk Inside an Ice Cave by Denis Budkov

One of the last great undiscovered travel secrets on our planet is the Land of Fire and Ice which can be found in the ice caves of Mutnovsky volcano. This magical spot is located some 70km south of the regional capital of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. These ice caves are carved by volcano-fed hot springs through the glaciers of Kamchatka. Photographer Denis Budkov came across the magical caves by chance while on expedition near the Mutnovsky volcano and didn’t pass up the chance to take shots of these wonderful ice cave formations.

The ceiling is translucent giving a multicolored glow inside the cave and there are streams rippling through rocks beneath. ‘Mutnovsky volcano is the heart of Kamchatka’, said Budkov. ‘This heart is literally beating and you can feel it while the earth is slightly moving under your feet’. The cave does not melt completely because the ceilings are made of four layers of compacted snow.

‘It’s hard to find such places without a guide’, said Budkov. ‘Even me, being an experienced guide, didn’t know about this cave as it is off the usual routes I normally take. Plus at the moment, it is impossible to get there as we have a metre and a half of snow covering everything. I’m not sure if it will even melt during the summer. So maybe the people who want to see the cave will have to wait until next year’.

Wonderland by Kirsty Mitchell

Wonderland by Kirsty Mitchell

Wonderland by Kirsty Mitchell

Wonderland is an ongoing series of portraits by UK photographer Kirsty Mitchell as a part tribute to her mother, part conceptual photography and part exploration of costume and set design. Her mother’s death in 2008 filled Mitchell an emptiness that she sought an outlet to fill the vacuum. She revisited the fairy tales her mother used to share with her as a child and decided to use them as an inspiration for a series of portraits that would make use of her background in fashion and costume making.

Each costume and prop is painstakingly handmade, and each set is actually as beautiful as it looks in her photographs. Mitchell uses little artificial light during her shoots and only selects naturally beautiful locations around her home. Some scenes in Wonderland (2009-2012) required a twelve-month wait to capture the blooming seasonal flowers that are then around only for a two-week period.

What makes Wonderland magical is that it’s real. Most fantasy worlds today are created digitally in post production, thanks to Photoshop. But those in Wonderland are created with intensive handcrafting of props and costumes, real locations, the time and work for the preparation of the photo shoot and the intense dedication of Mitchell she brings to her heart.

Night Paintings by Renan Cepeda

This photography project Night Paintings is a series of photographs shot by photographer Renan Cepeda using his unusual photographic technique in infrared photography and light painting. These fantastical images are created from long exposure, night-time shots that Cepeda “painted” with light using a simple pocket torch. His innovative technique turns an ordinary photo into a magical one.

Cepeda creates a contrast between the present natural object and artificially imposed scenery. This contrast produces a magical motif, which shows his creativity. Cepeda resisted the temptation of using Photoshop to manipulate his images, so the composition of the pictures remained true to the simplicity of the object.

13 Queens by Alex and Felix

Rulers over surreal worlds.

“There are unfamiliar worlds waiting to be discovered, filled with very well known objects of our everyday life yet staged in an unexpected way beyond recognition, draped with exuberant costumes of various shapes and colours. The insignia of power, the signs of their dreamland, hang from their bodies, stick to their skin and surround the sphere of their heads. These queens have truly incorporated their sensual empire. Every single one a proud queen, patron saint of ornaments, ruler over an empire of symbols, inviting the viewer to lose oneself.” These are the exact words that describe Alex and Felix‘s photography project 13 Queens that is taken from their website.

Alex Gertschen and Felix Meier are Swiss photographers creating photographs in an imaginative world, often absurd and surreal. The models, objects and props are carefully constructed before being to give a magical look. Each queen represent different personalities and stories.
