Night Animals Stalk the Streets of a Small Town in Finland by Mikko Lagerstedt

Finnish photographer Mikko Lagerstedt is back with another fantastic series called “Night Animals” which contains a whimsical series featuring “animals wondering around the city while people are sleeping”. If you are wondering how come an emu wanders in an empty street at night, well, these images are composites of two photos – one of the atmospheric background and the other of the animal itself, both captured by Lagerstedt.

However, the picture featuring a large cat off in the distance lit feintly from behind by a street lamp is actually shot on site, and it also what started this surreal series.

Star Trails by Lincoln Harrison

Star Trails by Lincoln Harrison

At first look, these spectacular photos may look like a product of clever computer graphics or Photoshop. But who would have thought that these are, in fact, the product of hour after hour of painstaking night-time shooting by photographer Lincoln Harrison. This stunning pictures of star trails across the Australian night sky were taken over 15 hours. Captured using a long exposure lens, the trails are created as the Earth rotates, giving the look of stars moving across the sky.

Harrison bought his camera just a little over 3 years ago and intended it for taking pictures of items he planned to sell on eBay, but realized he had far more interesting subjects to capture. Within a week, he became a bona fide photo enthusiast and accumulated eight lenses for his camera.

These days, he takes landscape photos at least twice a week. He only uses his camera at night when the conditions for nighttime photo are perfect. By using long exposures, clever zooming techniques and combining two images into a unified whole during post-production, Harrison was able to produce these Van Gogh-like pictures.

Night Paintings by Renan Cepeda

Night Paintings by Renan Cepeda

This photography project Night Paintings is a series of photographs shot by photographer Renan Cepeda using his unusual photographic technique in infrared photography and light painting. These fantastical images are created from long exposure, night-time shots that Cepeda “painted” with light using a simple pocket torch. His innovative technique turns an ordinary photo into a magical one.

Cepeda creates a contrast between the present natural object and artificially imposed scenery. This contrast produces a magical motif, which shows his creativity. Cepeda resisted the temptation of using Photoshop to manipulate his images, so the composition of the pictures remained true to the simplicity of the object.
