Breastfeeding in Real-Life by Stacie Turner

Photography Stacy Turner‘s Breastfeeding in Real Life photography project are not stylized photo shoots of moms feeding their babies in an ideal park-like setting but instead, her photos show the realities, the good and bad of this natural activity.

Her experience in nursing her own twins gave her the idea of this project. It became an incredibly dominant part of her life for three years. She followed the advice that is given to writers “write what you know” and as a photographer, she turned it to “shoot what you know.” Most of her friends were breastfeeding so she made them her models.

Turner hopes that her photo project can help normalize breastfeeding and lessen the negative reaction of the society about it.

Some Other Place by Lori Nix

American photographer Lori Nix creates scenes based on the style of classic landscape painters of the schools of Romanticism. Nix is a traditional photographer and she constructs her subjects rather than finding it. All of her photos are done in front of a camera with no digital manipulation. This photo project Some Other Place is one of her projects which display a world between a reality and illusion.

Lori Nix is interested in depicting danger and disaster but she mixes it with a touch of humor. She was born in a small town in Kansas and every season brought its own drama that inspired her to recreate this experiences in one of her photo projects Accidentally Kansas.

Nix said, “Photography is very subjective and every person will come away with something different from the same picture. My personal opinion is that photography should elicit some form of emotion in the viewer, be it awe, anger, or humor. Photography should also introduce the viewer to a new perspective.”

The Dreamkeepers by Polixeni Papapetrou

The Dreamkeepers photography project by Polixeni Papapetrou explores an unknown filled with dreams, fears and hopes. Papapetrou created a space for transformation for the children as they transitioned from childhood to adolescence. This space is part fantasy and part reality.

Papapetrou’s photography practice has involved collaboration with her children and their friends for over a decade. The subjects in this photo project are her own children, aged 13 and 15. She became interested in reflecting upon the transition of one phase of life to another. In this project, Papapetrou used the technique of collapsing the life cycle into one body. It is both a representation of youth and the aged and a meditation on being itself.

India Song by Karen Knorr

India Song by Karen Knorr

Karen Knorr‘s works portrays the visual richness found in the stories of India using sacred sites to highlight caste, femininity and its relationship with the animal world.

In her most recent photography project, the “India Song”, each finished photograph is both a mystery and a fable. She recreated the Panchatantra – an ancient Indian collection of animal fables for the 21st century and blurred the boundaries between illusion and reality. She inserts the animal subjects by digital means within the consistently frontal interior photograph. These interiors are carefully photographed with a large format analogue camera and Knorr’s own photos of live animals are then inserted to the rooms and sites.

The India Song is her first solo show in United States. The series was also nominated for the 2012 Deutsche Borse Photography Prize.
