Identical Twins by Martin Schoeller

Martin Schoeller, the New York based photographer is best known for his tight portraits or “close up” series. This time, he explores the link between identical twins. The above photo shows six-year-old Johanna Gill puts a protective hand on her sister, Eva. The twins both have mild autism, a disorder linked to genetic inheritance.

Long a source of fascination, twins have often been a theme of myth and legend – just like Romulus and Remus who founded Rome. In this photographic study, Schoeller uses his close-up portrait style to photograph 40 sets of identical twins, capturing every aspect of their facial structure. We notice the similarities and the seemingly miniscule–yet significant–differences.

Schoeller began photographing twins when he was commissioned for National Geographic. He is an award-winning photographer who has worked on Vogue, The New Yorker and Vanity Fair.

The Blond Twins of Mengele by Gabriele Galimberti

The Blond Twins of Mengele by Gabriele Galimberti

Photographer Gabriele Galimberti‘s photo project The Blond Twins of Mengele documents the abnormal number of twins in the town of Candido Godoi in Brazil – the so-called “twin capital of the world.” 20% of the population in this town consists mostly of twins with blond hair and blue eyes. Twins occur normally once in 80 pregnancies, but here they occur once in every five.

Jorge Camarasa, a specialist in the Nazi post-war flight to South America, claims that this high rate of twins may be due to the Nazi doctor, Josef Mengele. During the Second World War, Mengele carried out experiments for the production of twins. He visited the small town of Candido Godoi various times and made it his laboratory where he worked on creating his master race.

Mengele gave medical attention to several women, followed their pregnancies and treated them with new types of drugs. The majority of twins were born in 1952, the year when he was first reported to have visited the town.

Doppelgangers by Francois Brunelle

Doppelgangers

Doppelgangers by Francois Brunelle

The Doppelgangers project by Francois Brunelle looks at how strangers share not only their visual appearance but also captures a view of how the world looks at them. These are portraits of people that don’t have family ties but have intriguing similarities that sometimes some look like identical twins themselves.

Brunelle spent 12 years looking for real life doppelgangers and photographing them. And this unique idea started to draw him some well-deserved attention. I’m stunned at how this photo project compares the similarities of these people in dark contrast.

Besides photography, he also wrote The Seven Essential Tools for the Creative Photographer where he shared his own artistic skills for aspiring and professional photographers.
