A Walk Inside an Ice Cave by Denis Budkov

A Walk Inside an Ice Cave by Denis Budkov

One of the last great undiscovered travel secrets on our planet is the Land of Fire and Ice which can be found in the ice caves of Mutnovsky volcano. This magical spot is located some 70km south of the regional capital of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. These ice caves are carved by volcano-fed hot springs through the glaciers of Kamchatka. Photographer Denis Budkov came across the magical caves by chance while on expedition near the Mutnovsky volcano and didn’t pass up the chance to take shots of these wonderful ice cave formations.

The ceiling is translucent giving a multicolored glow inside the cave and there are streams rippling through rocks beneath. ‘Mutnovsky volcano is the heart of Kamchatka’, said Budkov. ‘This heart is literally beating and you can feel it while the earth is slightly moving under your feet’. The cave does not melt completely because the ceilings are made of four layers of compacted snow.

‘It’s hard to find such places without a guide’, said Budkov. ‘Even me, being an experienced guide, didn’t know about this cave as it is off the usual routes I normally take. Plus at the moment, it is impossible to get there as we have a metre and a half of snow covering everything. I’m not sure if it will even melt during the summer. So maybe the people who want to see the cave will have to wait until next year’.

Volcano Photography by Liudmila and Andrey

It’s not everyday one gets a chance to get up close and photograph a volcanic lava flow but when Plosky Tolbachik, a volcano in the eastern part of Russia became active again after a 36 year dormant period, photographers Andrey and Liudmila braved the dangers and barely got away with these hard-core pictures.

Andrey and Liudmila adventured up the volcano with a team of volcanologists to capture images of the eruptions. At first, they were afraid that they might be hit by bubbling lava but luckily, their volcanologist calmed them down.

They were calmly standing at a safe distance away from the lava flow when tragedy struck, “at some point we realised that something was in the way of lava stream, and it was getting through every hole and crack it could find – or break through. It looks like that the crater, on the edge of which we were standing, actually saved our lives because at least lava started leaking inside it, instead of swelling up the slope.”

One of the volcanologists lost his backpack to the lava flow, but the photographers escaped safely with their sensational pictures.
